Terps vs. Tar Heels Thread

After an encouraging hoops opener (to everyone but Al V), it’s time for the football team to follow suit.  Ah, which team will we see today?  Let’s hope that number by North Carolina’s name as well as all the ESPN ‘experts’ picking the Heels gets our guys going.

This will be a simple gameplan.  It’s all up to both lines. Our offensive line must have a bounce-back game and we NEED to run the ball.  We have running backs who can get it done, it’s up to the line to hit some people and wear them down.

The D line doesn’t need to turn in a game like Wake Forest (though it would be nice), they just need to contain the runners and get some pressure on the passer.  We all know Chris Cosh is not going to blitz that much, which leaves it all to the line to make some plays.

I’d also love to see Portis out there again.  Though he wasn’t always effective, it’s still a different look and we need to keep that UNC defense off balance.

Today’s game is the difference between a New Year’s bowl and spending the holidays on the blue turf in Idaho.  Let’s get it done.

  1. It could be another wet, sloppy game. We’ve done that before so it could be, could be an advantage. That is, if we are able to run the ball!

  2. Rough start, but nice answer. We are moving the ball on the ground very well so far.

  3. Just took the lead 14-12. Let’s see a defensive stop or two.

  4. The weather is crap…you can tell that both teams are lacking a bit of fire, as are the fans.

MD is really moving the ball on offense, controlling TOP. They almost look, for a lack of a better word, professional out there. Not a lot of rah, rah…just focused. I like it.

If MD can score before halftime, that will be huge…

  5. By the way, why would anyone go by the nickname “Cooter”?

  6. Only Dukes of Hazzard fans!

  7. c’mon offense! put a drive together! 10 minutes left in the game and they have not gotten deeper than the UNC 35 yard line. They are running out of time.

  8. was that a blitz by the UMD defense? AWESOME. C’mon offense nice 7 minute drive for a TD right here

  9. Hey wuts with the time stamp on these posts…it’s an hour ahead…did the server not fall back? LOL

  10. Great win!!! Could Maryland ever win a game where the last drive of the game could not decide the game. Does anyone know how North Carolina’s quarterback and place kicker can both wear #11 in the same game?

  11. There was a Cooter who lived across the hall from me in Ellicott, sophomore year…

  12. Good win, although I kinda expected it since UNC was ranked. In college two players can wear the same number, they just can’t be in the field at the same time. There was a guy on USC’s defense that wore the same number as their QB.

  13. Did my eyes play a trick on me or did Obi stumble and grab his right thigh right after he kicked off following his game winning FG

  14. Another great win for a MD team. A win on National TC over UNC BB and now # 15 UNC FB is taken down by the Turtle and tenderised a bit. Awesome.

Look like we play UNC @ Chapel Hill this year in BB . No doubt they will be ready for us. Hope those same babes that were crying in the stands last year are there again.

Another GREAT win for our Terps..

  15. Big win. It’s FSU for all the marbles. We controlled that game but not on the scoreboard. We need to finish drives.

Our D played better but UNC doesn’t have much O. They do have a really good defense and we moved the ball really well against them.

Like I have been saying all year…we have holes on our team but so does everyone else in the ACC. Let’s get to that ACC championship game!!!!

  16. With over 40 minutes of time of possession, this game should not have been close. Thankfully, the Terps pulled it off. It seems as long as we play ranked teams, we’ll win.

  17. Great win for the Terps. Who would have thought that they’d be controlling their own destiny this late in the season. A win vs FSU next week in the division crown is ours (although we may need to beat a resurgent BC team that is working over FSU right now). Didn’t see much of the game but of what I did see the defense played well. I still don’t understand why they went for it on 4th and 5 with 8 mins left in the first half on the Tarheels 40. They didn’t get it and UNC marched down the field and converted a fg to take the lead. They should have punted and tried to take advantage of the field in a game where both teams weren’t moving the ball much. In the end we were able to score one more fg but if we hadn’t that call would have been the reason we lost.

  18. We play UNC in Chapel Hill and in College Park this year in B-Ball. In fact we’re the only team in the ACC that plays UNC and Duke 2x this season.

  19. So now that fsu lost to bc I wonder if they’ll be ranked when we play them next week. If not that could be a problem…

  20. Concerning FSU, as long as we don’t give up big plays we’ll be fine. Their QB Ponder is not good enough to put together 15 play drives. I think out passive defense actually might work to our advantage next week.

  21. In Yahoo Sports today, some d-bad wrote an article saying that the ACC doesn’t deserve a BCS spot this because there isn’t one dominant team in the league. He also mocks MD’s win last night…in the rain…against a ranked team.

Okay, yes, no ACC team has dominated this year; but has anyone checked out the Big East this year? Horrid. Pitt and Cincy are atop the Big East…how would they fare in the ACC this year? Has anyone checked out the Big 10 this year? The top of the Big 10 is stronger than the top of the ACC, but you get beyond PSU, OSU, and MSU and the Big 10 is pretty bad. There are lots of gimmes in the Big 10…not so much in the ACC.

So…on to FSU next week. That they are not ranked does trouble me. That the game is at night troubles me. That MD is at home heartens me. That MD always gets fired up against FSU heartens me. If this team decides to show up with some fire, they can win this game. If they run the ball and stop the run like they did this week, they win.

By the way, what is the deal with MD’s defense? They blitzed and stuffed the box…where’s this been all year? I’d love to know why Cosh gameplans so differently from week to week even when the opponents from week to week seem to have the same strengths (e.g., VT and UNC run the ball to establish the pass).

  22. DBR, I saw the same thing and was looking to see how he walked off the field. Didn’t see him in the crowd. Has me a little concerned.

Now, I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer (ChE ’73), but can someone explain any logical reasoning for how Portis is/is not used during the game? Is showing “a different look” really worth the lack of production from this guy?

  23. I got a feeling that fumble will spell the end of the Portis experiment for a while. The coaches were not pleased and he had DHB open on the pass and completely missed him.

AP Poll is out. We are back up to 22 and FSU is no longer ranked. Uh Oh!

  24. We are a better team than FSU. If we play up to our talent level we will win. It really is that simple.

  25. With this year’s Terps football team, nothing is that simple…

On another note, I was only able to catch the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth. It was 15-14 UNC the whole time and both teams were quite uninspiring. I winced at the thought of the rest of the country watching this quality of play.

When I got home and checked the final score, 17-15, two thoughts went through my mind–whew, thank god for the win; and ugh, winning ugly again. I don’t understand with the offensive weaponry we have, why we can’t light up the board? I thought Franklin was supposed to give us that capabiltiy when he was hired.

While I was waiting at halftime for the Terps-UNC to resume, they kept showing among other things, Texas-Kansas highlights with Colt McCoy zinging one big completion after another. I kept thinking, why can’t Turner do something similar to what McCoy does for Texas for us? Granted the Texas kid gets a bit of a talent-edge over Turner, but not that big of an edge.

I guess what I’m asking is why can’t our offense get us 30 or so points a game? Why do we have such a hard time getting up into the twenties, let alone the thirties? At least some more serious offensive efforts might get us out of these ugly 17-15 contests. What do you guys think?

  26. Terpie Men’s Soccer – 2008 ACC Champs!

Kudos to Sasho & the guys!

  27. Did anyone see the tarheel fan/stripper wannabe in section 25 who caused such a ruckus that her boyfriend and friend got ejected by the troopers? She was such nightmare and caused such a scene – then her friends were arrested and she stayed in the game crying. That’s high moral character! I hope someone put her and her wasted ‘heel fans on You Tube.

  28. Latest BCS rankings out…

    UNC #22
    Miami #23
    Terps #25

    Hmm..

  29. First…CONGRATS TO THE SOCCER TEAM! GO TERPS!

Second…FSU is no longer ranked??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Third…Field Hockey team won their 1st round NCAA Tounament game. Don’t know about the 2nd game results. Terps are the overall #1 seed in the Tourney.

Fourth…B-Ball recruiting info coming later, good stuff.

  30. JohnE:

MD really came out moving the ball. Their offense played very well in the quarter and a half, even in what appeared to be a Noah’s Ark rain storm. Then it stopped raining, and MD stopped doing well on offense. It was very strange.

The score is a bit misleading because MD’s D really put the clamps on UNC. UNC scored on a strange bad throw/tipped ball, and that was pretty much the extent of UNC’s offensive output for the entire game. MD dominated both sides of the ball for the duration.

In my estimation, MD has two gamebreakers…DHB and Scott, which means it is a bit easy to gameplan MD’s offense. Double team DHB…check…and put 8 men at the line…check. No one else on the team really scares a D. Ronnie Tyler has a lot of potential to be that 3rd gamebreaker, but I think he isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer; so he doesn’t, as of yet, impact the game as he might (although his 3rd down reception in the 4th quarter was huge).

It’s strange…MD has athletic studs all through their LB corps. If they could get the same type of athletic studs on O, they’d be scary good. MD has become quite the Linebacker U.

  31. We move the ball all over the field but don’t punch it in. When they don’t have to worry about the deep ball, they seem to be able to cover H-Bey. That really falls back on Turner. He has to find those seems in the redzone. Fridge must have him scared of the pick down there because he takes no chances at all. If someone isn’t wipe open he usually throws it in the cheap seats.

We have a great O-line but if the D throws 8-9 in the box inside the 20, you gotta chuck it.

  32. Will Regan and his dad evidently had a good time in College Park, Friday and Sat. A lot of the visit was academic related as Will is like an A student at a prestigious HS in Buffalo area. Will Barton and crew was at the Bucknell game. Word is that there are peeps in Baltimore really pushing him to become a Terp, hopefully things stay that way. But biggest issue for Barton is getting his grades in order.

Looks like Padgett’s paper work…LOI/financial aid…to be processed and become official on Monday.

  33. Jelani Jenkins and a bunch of other FB recruits coming to the game against FSU. Terps calling for a black out, so if you’re going to the game dress accordingly :)

  34. According to the Post Cosh’s kid is on his way to being a top QB recruit …could this be the reason Ralph is so lenient with Cosh and the D’s inconsistency?

  35. COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland added an outstanding post prospect on Monday when James Padgett signed a National Letter of Intent to play men’s basketball at the university, head coach Gary Williams announced.

Padgett is a 6-foot-8, 212-pound power forward from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was ranked 54th nationally at power forward by ESPN.com, and 21st in the nation and a four-star prospect at center by Scout.com.

His high school coach, Dwayne Morton, said he hoped Padgett might turn into the “best big man in New York City this year.” Morton said he is outstanding with his back to the basket, and ESPN.com called him a “very athletic interior player.” He averaged nearly a double-double each game, with 10.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game last season as a junior.

“James is a strong, physical player who knows how to play with his back to the basket, while expanding his perimeter game,” said Williams, who will begin his 20th season as head coach of his alma mater on Friday night against Bucknell. “He is a winner. His Lincoln High School team won the New York State Class AA Championship last year.”

Padgett played AAU ball for the Juice All-Stars and chose Maryland over Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Pittsburgh. Lincoln High is the same school that produced Stephon Marbury. Padgett transferred to Lincoln after his sophomore season at Xaverian High.

He becomes the second four-star forward to sign with the Terps in the past week. Jordan Williams, a 6-foot-10 center from Torrington, Conn., signed on Thursday.

“With our quality guards returning, we felt a need to get bigger inside. James and Jordan will allow us to do that,” said Gary Williams.
