The Duke Aftermath

Wow, there were sure were some interesting comments last night.  Losing to Duke sure brings out the frustration for us!

Hey, we can still say we’ve won a National Title more recently than them, so we still have that going for us… which is nice.

Anyway, despite the Duke fan’s comments, I really believe that it’s the frustration of being right in the game for the first 30+ minutes and not finishing that has a lot of us looking for blame.

In my opinion, the reality is we came to play last night.  We played hard.  The defense in the first 30+ minutes was as good as it’s been all year, with just a few breakdowns (but that’s going to happen).  In the past week, I’m more convinced that this team has a legitimate shot of getting to the tournament.  We are still flawed, or course, so it won’t be easy, but this team has made me proud the last week.

I really think the great defense was the reason for the poor free throw shooting.  I really think the players were exhausted after running around and that caused them to miss those shots they normally make.  No excuses.  They need to be stronger on the line and make those shots since the FT’s were a big reason we lost control of the game late.

Hopefully the players learn from this game.  They were close to pulling off one hell of a week, but Vasquez has to control his emotions to the point of not picking up silly fouls.  Mosley has to realize that he does not need to take a charge every time down the floor.  Mosley had a freshman game.  It was bound to happen.  But I don’t blame Gary for sticking with him because Mosley makes things happen on the defensive end and that’s what we needed.  We needed to get some easy buckets late, and the defense could have allowed us to score in transition.

In hindsight, I’m sure Gary would not have done some of the things he did, but personally I don’t have a problem with his strategy except for the very short-lived attempt at a zone that failed miserably, though I’m thinking that may have had something to do with the foul trouble.

In any rate, we did not embarrass ourselves and while Virginia Tech’s win last night was not good for us, we still control our own destiny.  All 3 remaining games are winable and they are all losable too.  Step one is winning a big game on the road this Sunday. We’ll need a top effort, but I have confidence this team will be ready and give it all they got.  We’ll see whether it’ll be enough.

  1. Yeah Greg, the zone was put in because of the foul trouble, but did not work. I thought Gary coached a great game. I thought rotating GV and SM in the end was a good move given the foul situation. If we hit some of those 5 missed foul shots in the last few minutes, the complexion of the game changes. Also most of the bad / questionable calls came from one ref who seemed to have a hard on against Gary and GV.
Never the less Duke beat us, they are more talented this year and we’ll be back in their faces next year.
    So on to NC State.

  2. I love this site but some soupers just don’t react well to a loss. We played a top ten team, had major foul problems and were down two with about 3 minutes left in the game. Considering where this team came from, not exactly a bad game.

We also seem to “pick on” certain players for their four year career. Mosley looks like the next on the list. The kid is taking on the role Gary has given him. He does play good defense and played well against Henderson in the first half. The second half Henderson really got going but he is probably one of the ten toughest guys to guard in the country. Mosley is a freshman, cut him some slack.

We played hard on both ends of the court we just didn’t have the horses at the end of the game to win. I will tell you this, I wouldn’t mind seeing them again in the second round of the ACC tourney.

  3. Regarding the officiating, there were bad calls both ways. You could argue that the bad calls against the Terps hurt them more as far as the game went, but my problem was the inconsistency of the calls. There seemed to be chunks of time where a lot of contact would be allowed, then they all of a sudden called it tight for a while. That, more than anything, gets in the heads of the players and they just don’t know what’s a foul and what’s not at certain times of the game.

  4. Gregg / Jeremy – Is there anyway to ban markmax from last nights thread? Seriously, having someone throwing racial slurs around is bullshit.

I was pretty distraught after the game b/c we were soooo close. We just didn’t put together as complete of a game as we needed. FT’s killed us.

Ricksterps, I was all over Mosley last night, but that doesn’t mean he’s on any “list.” I just called it like I saw it, and I saw a terrible game from him. He got abused by Henderson and was just plain bad on offense. That said, I do like his game and think his offense will come around. Is was just a bad game and I thought Gary should have given someone else a shot, though no other guard was really stepping up.

Finally, I’m really surprised at the equality of the ft’s for each team. It seemed like MD was getting hosed, but there’s no way you can say it was really even when we have three players foul out and they have none.

  5. Wow, I hate Duke so much, exactly because of “fans” like this: http://poeticrevenge.wordpress.com/

  6. Again, I don’t want to blame the loss on the refs but the FT discrepancy should have been way in our favor. We took the ball to the hole all night. They shot jump shots most of the night. That is what the refs usually point to when they are explaining the big difference in FTs between teams.

Okaybowler, I wasn’t just referring to you. I have seen a million posts this year about “how can he have scored so much in high school and not at all for UMD.” My point is his role is defense, rebounding…just hustling around. You will see him blossom into a scorer over the next couple years. Let’s not get on him for being a team player and taking on the role given to him.

If we win the State game the pressure is off again. We have a beatable Wake squad coming that would basically get us in tourney with a win.

  7. Rick – Mosley may well be another Mouton before this is done. He’s a heart-and-soul kind of player and if my boy Greivis happens to leave (which I believe he won’t), then next year you’ll see Sean Mosley become the emotional engine of the team. I also have to praise Neal to the stars….another give-everything kind of player. You can keep your Duke greyhounds and give me the blue collar guys who won’t say die. Eric showed toughness too, last night. Bad things happen in games–injuries, fouls, missed shots–but last night our guys showed us a lot. No Terp has gotten any taller since the year began or suddenly grown wings. They are what they are and are finally starting to make the most of it.

  8. Kaze. We can’t GET any greyhounds . . . that’s why we’re stuck with guys like “never say die” Neal. Let’s not make it seem like we have a choice.

  9. The officiating was atrocious. Not just inconsistent, but often inexplicable. The fifth foul call on Vasquez was terrible. A charge should only be called when the offensive player is gaining an advantage. Vasquez didn’t knock the guy over until he was coming down. Should have been a no-call. On the other hand, Mosley needs to quit playing as if he is auditioning to transfer to Duke. He needs to set his position.

Loved that pick Neal set. The beauty of it was that it was totally clean and it used Duke’s annoying overagressiveness against itself. They must have replayed that about twenty times.

It was really weird that the announcers only realized in hindsight that Vaz had four fouls. That was a killer; Vaz played only 22 minutes of the game.

Hayes played very well. If anything, he should have kept going to the well. He had a matchup advantage. Also, Milbourne had an advantage, and he could have scored more. We played extremely well. If Duke didn’t have Henderson elevating his game, and if we’d shot free throws the way we usually do, we could have won. We actually shot for a higher percentage than they did (.480 to .439).

The schedule is favorable now. We have Wake at home. Wake sucks on the road. You notice that whenever they show “signature wins” by the bottom ACC schools, they are mostly against Wake, “the gift that keeps on giving” as Gminski put it last night. And we have UVA and NC State on the road, and they are improved and tough, but if you had to play anyone besides GT, those are the two schools you’d pick. On the other hand, VT now has to run the Duke/UNC gauntlet at home and face FSU on the road. So me may still finish ahead of the Hokies.

We play Carolina better than we do Duke, although Carolina is the better team. I think Carolina’s fun-and-gun style produces more opportunities for our guys on offense. Tucker and Mosley do best in that type of a game. Tucker was a real disappointment last night.

Also interesting thing last night was that ESPN had Dukie V. calling the Marquette-UCONN game instead of the Duke game.

I look at Pitt and UCONN, and they have absolutely huge guys who look like they’re on steroids.

  10. Tough, tough loss.

My boy, Burney, didn’t even see the floor.

Terps lost it, IMO, at the line. They hit there free throws (including all the missed front ends of 1 and 1s), then the complexion of the game changes completely.

Regarding the officiating, henderson and williams got away with a couple of push offs and GV had a couple of cheepies, but that was not the reason the Terps lost.

  11. If the Terps had hit their freethrows and scooped up a few more of those loose balls in the paint dook grabbed off the floor and converted, they probably get the W. The threes hurt, but overall all I think we did a decent job keeping their shooters somewhat in check, at least until the last five minutes or so when they hit several daggers. Still, I think it was the missed freethrows that ultimately did us in.

I liked the way Dave Neal played last night, and to a degree Dino, but where the heck was Burney? Everytime Duke drove the lane in the second half for an easy layup, I kept thinking, why no JB? Couldn’t we have used his shotblocking capability? After the UNC win, I expected to see more of him, not less. Anybody got an explaination for it?

  12. Burney would have helped with both offensive and defensive rebounding. He should have been given a shot, especially when Zoubek was in.

Henderson scored 19 point on 18 shots, which is not good at all. We shouldn’t have doubled him and left the 3 point shooters open. The 3 point shooters killed us, especially at the end.

Even with foul trouble, zone wasn’t the way to go. Duke scored against it. It would have been better to play 3 bigs with LM at the 3 and stick with man to man.

The missed FTs killed us. It’s too bad that Greivis was in foul trouble and Mosley got hurt.

  13. I’m still tryna recover from the F-U Singler chant. No excuse for that, none at all. I just cringed. I had hoped that during the stoppage of play Gary was going to get on the microphone and tell the Students to stop that and show some class/sportsmanship.

At that moment I was really embarrassed. It wasn’t like one person shouting “go back to the ghetto” it sounded like the majority of the student sections.

Be loud…be passionate…paint yourselfs red black and gold but show some class.

  14. My thoughts on the game… Great effort, stayed in the game the whole way even with GV out. My expectations for this year’s team has been exceeded this week so I guess I am happy. Mosely will be good, I have said this over and over all year, but how could he have been such a prolific scorer in high school!! It just had to be his physical strength overpowering kids and getting his points in close. He makes strong moves but throws up shots with no finesse at all, even the ones that go in. Hayes played very well last night, he actually looked mad which I’d like to see more of. Neal does all that you can ask of him and more. This guy has really come up big for us this year playing way over his head and desrves a lot of credit, the effort is there night in and night out. Milbourne is steadily improving, and that 10 ft. jumper is getting consistent. Gary has done a great job coaching these kids, I have always supported him, but that doesn’t mean he gets a free pass. We are paying dearly for his lack of recruiting as evidenced by having NO big men that can compete in the ACC. Seriously, BD, DG, and to some extent JG are not starting material for a mid major let alone the ACC. Overall, I wrote this year off as an NIT year long ago, but now I actually believe we could make the NCAA’s. Once again, above my expectations, and I think all of us should realize that if we do make the tourney it is a HUGE accomplishment for a team that is undermanned with no inside presence at all. The reason we lost to Duke, was simple, we have to rely on our guards (everyone actually) to crash the boards on every shot and that causes fatigue late in the game. Hand it to Duke though, they hit threes when they needed to and that always kills us.

  15. Who is JG?

  16. DBR – Agree the F U Singler stuff was ridiculous, Mosley stepped on his foot, not like it was on purpose. I hate that stuff, the students bring so much passion and energy while my fellow alumni are sitting on their hands, but then they go and mess things up and just sound like classless trash when they start saying things like that. Isn’t there a happy medium? Don’t get me wrong I hate Singler, but I would much rather see Milbourne dunk on his head and have the whole place go crazy.

  17. Let’s not tarnish the whole student section. I was watching pretty intensely and didn’t hear that chant. I heard some chant with Singler but couldn’t make out what they were saying. If they were saying that, then obviously that is way over the line.

Our crowd has the reputation of “working blue”. I think some kids come in trying to continue that tradition.

I like how Patrick brought up the calling the hotel thing. Bilas said that was harmless. Then he brings up the pulling the fire alarm. Okay, one guy posts on a website saying someone should pull the fire alarm at the hotel and that is news worthy?

  18. Ricksterps, I don’t know how you missed that chant it sounded like the majority of the student sections.

Meanwhile…as I mentioned last night in my post about recruits at the game, Terell Vinson will be taking an official visit to UMD. Don’t have the date yet.

  19. Ricksterps – Maybe from T.V. it wasn’t so clear but at the arena it was crystal clear and sadly it was just about the whole student section. I’m not trying to tarnish all of the students, there were some great signs at the game and as whole they bring a ton of energy and support to Comcast, it’s just that this knuckle head mentality takes over every once in a while and they do stupid things. I mean not like they were throwing things or anyone was in physical danger, but still it was stupid. Also this isn’t a MD thing only, something that didn’t get much pub recently was the Georgetown students cursing out the refs this past week. I’m not naive, it happens just about everywhere.

Also I might sound like I’m 80 but I’m really not….though MD is doing a good job at making me age quicker haha.

  20. The “F*** you Singler” chant came through loud and clear on my TV set. Not sure how it could be missed. There is no excuse for that. Singler was just standing there guarding his man and Mosley stepped on his shoe and fell. I’m sure it didn’t look that way in person, but once they showed the replay it was obvious.

The Duke commenter from the last thread was right when he (or she) took a shot at our fans’ (read students) creativity. As a recent grad, I can attest to the desire to carry on tradition, but it’s time to come up with something new. It might take a while to phase out that kind of mentality, but it can happen. The rioting trend seems to already be phasing out. (Had we won last night, I may have been proven wrong on that statement.)

I agree with DBR,. Gary needs to get on the mic and speak out.

  21. Stevend The Refs certainly had an affect on the game. Our best player missed almost the entire second half on IMHO seriously ticky-tack fouls. Would we have won if it was Gerald Henerson instead of Vasquez in that situation?

  22. Wow. thanks for link Will B. That kid is class-A tool. I could resist making a comment. If you want a chuckle, check it out: http://poeticrevenge.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/welcome-to-the-jungle/#comment-70.

I’m pretty sure I threw in examples from UVA fans but whatever. They’re all the same.

  23. On a positive note about the fans, Comcast seemed loud until the outcome was no longer in question. I loved the Scheyer masks. THAT is the kind of thing I’d like to see the students do more of….great signs…masks of players…and just being LOUD.

Also, I really felt like the school should have draped Gold Terps T-Shirts on each student’s seat. It would have been awesome to see the team in gold and the student section in gold.

  24. Someone should mention these classless acts last night by Duke…

    1. We didn’t see the other side of the story but clearly Bowie got annoyed by Paulus who most likely was elbowing him down at the other side of the court. This led to a double foul but Paulus just looked like he was over him.
    2. Paulus pounding his hands on the halfcourt symbol on the floor like an asshole.
    3. Somewhat debatable, but after the henderson dunk which was amazing, I thought there was a little bit of an excessive celebration but stomping his feet on the floor and standing there throwing his arms out. It’s questionable just cause of the length and nature of the celebration, but might of been worthy of a T

  25. Regarding the fouls, I’ll say this…

Henderson, by my count, pushed off with his forearm on three drives to the basket. Those would have been fouls had he been wearing a yellow jersey. There is no question about that, given how tightly the refs were calling Greivis. Those should have all been fouls by any rational standard.

It was so bad, that I can’t really come up with an explanation for it. Maybe that particular ref has it out for Vaz? I can’t imagine a grown man having a vendetta against a 20-year old kid; but what do I know? Henderson is a great player and clearly gets the benefit of the doubt; but the discrepancy goes so far above what is fair; that it makes me want to scream. This was a home game for us!!!!

  26. About the double foul, it looked to me like Paulus kept poking and bumping into Bowie. It even looked like he pinched his stomach at one point… yeesh. Paulus was just trying to get under his skin and it worked. In Bowie’s defense though, simply looking at Paulus is enough to get under my skin, so credit to Bowie for holding out that long.

  27. jonburns/jeremy,

Yes, Henderson did deserve to be called for those push-offs. I don’t remember 3, but on one they actually went overboard and called Mosely for a foul, which was unbelieveable. {my tv almost caught a beer bottle on that one} The calls against GV were all legit, except for maybe that last one…..maybe. I blame GV for those, not the refs.

I stand by my comment, however, that the refs did not ‘cost the game.’ Here’s my reasoning: The Terps lost because dook scored more points. The refs do not score points. In order to score points, one needs to put the ball in the basket. dook did that. In the final 10 minutes, the Terps did not. Had the Terps hit their foul shots or shot better from 3-point land, and the game was closer, I might be belly-aching more about the Refs. As the game unfloded, however, the refs were irritating, but they did not cost the game.

  28. I can’t believe I come to this blog for b-ball talk and have to listen to insane, racist rambling. I know it’s just one dude, but it puts a bad taste in my mouth.

  29. I dont think Refs can put the ball in the basket. That would be over the top! I think GV’s fourth foul was suspect too (the steal from Zoubek). I thought the last foul was ridiculous. I am not saying they cost us the game, I am saying they affected the game. Surely if the refs decided, Lets foul Vasquez out fast, that would affect the game right? I am by no means saying thats what they did, but the idea that the refs cannot affect the game without scoring points for one team seems odd. But hey, the rest of the team should be able to carry on without Vasquez, right?

  30. I must have been screaming at my TV when the chant was being done. My bad…

Yea RT, it gets so I almost skip the site on game nights. We have a tenancy to get some pretty extreme stuff spewed on here when emotions run that high.

Sorta like our student section :)

  31. The thing about being in a crowd and the thing about being an anonymous commenter on a website is basically the same: you lose a little bit of your morality.

  32. The Gerald Henderson push off ranks up there with the Lebron James lowered shoulder.

  33. jonbruns, I was proud of what the team did in a nearly 10 minute stretch with Vaz on the bench. We matched them shot for shot and held our own. You just can’t expect to do it for an entire half. Vaz was off his game and most of it had to do with the fouls. We were so good at getting to the basket early in the game and the foul trouble took us completely out of what was working.

  34. I’m glad that the announcers didn’t react to the F-U chant. I almost didn’t believe that the sound guys would keep the sound on for as long as they did as the chant continued to drum into my ears. I was so ashamed.

I’m not so sad about the game, i’m more sad that it has been the main focus of my last few days and now it’s over i need to get back to all of the work i was disregarding. boo.

  35. I must agree with DBR. The F U Singler chant was quite embarrassing to the Terps fans like me in the stands. There were a few Dookies near me, all reserved and well behaved, but they looked disgusted at this performance.
The chanting was very loud and could be heard throughout the CC.
I wish they would try another tact in the future.

  36. About the refs:

Its unfortunate, but instead of calling a fair game, i honestly believe that they understand that it would be out of the norm for them to call equal fouls on both sides of the ball.

People come to expect that Duke will have less fouls than whomever they play. A truly impartial onlooker might look at all of the games leading up to one game where duke is called for more fouls than the team that they play, and say, “wow the refs must have been really biased, look how this one game doesn’t fit the pattern.”
In that case, the impartial onlooker assumes that the refs are biased against duke.

Its sad, but when calling equal fouls means that you are biased is the norm for refs at duke games.

  37. Hopefully well get another shot at Duke in the ACC tourney. If we get the 7 seed that could happen as Duke looks like it will take the 2 seed. I really think that we can beat them if Vasquez stays out of foul trouble.

  38. DC Assault coaches were at the game last night at least a half dozen of them with Curtis Malone sitting behind the bench.

  39. I can’t believe that Dave Neal’s pick isn’t on YouTube yet.

  40. When the student section chants F-U Singler, Gary should get on the mike and simply ask the fans to stop. They will if he asks. For some reason I don’t think he’s ever asked the crowd to stop shouting a-hole or f-duke or anything like that. He should. If it were some other coach, we’d be all over him. I’m gonna have grandkids someday soon and I want to take them to games and raise some little Terps. This won’t do.

  41. jonburns, Was that GV’s 4th? I thought they had called Milbourne for pushing Zoubak from behind. {I guess I’m as clueless as bilas and patrick} Yeah, if that call was on GV, that was bad. It was clearly a loose ball situation, so there can’t be a reach in, which is what would have had to have been called.

Oh well. What’s done is done. All that matters now is NCST.

  42. Last night Maryland fans were taunting an injured Duke player while he was lying on the floor. Real class act you got there. Not to mention Maryland fans shouting “Fuck You Kyle Singler” after the Maryland player spazzed out and sprained his own ankle.

I dare you to give me any example of Duke fans acting like that. If they get even close, Coach K has taken the microphone and told them to knock it off. And they do.

Maryland fans are assholes. Looks like your own house doesn’t belong to Greivis Vasquez any more than Cameron Indoor Stadium.

  43. Not to keep piling on the students but a funny moment in the night was when a bunch of kids from Dematha (football recruits?) walked in front of the Wall wearing their letter jackets that had a big D on the chest. So of course a bunch of students thought they were Duke fans and starting booing them and calling a-holes, and then quickly others joined in until they finally realized that these were “friendlies.”
Alright I’m done talking about fan behavior lets bring on the Pack.

  44. You are so right Stevend. NCST is the thing the Terps need to focus on. Glad that game is Sunday…I think our kids may be a little leg weary from two emotionally charged games, one that went to OT.

Currently the Terps RPI rank drops to 58 per RealTimeRPI. Va Tech vaults to 52 with their road win. NC State’s RPI Rank is currently 90 but they play Wake Forest tonight. If they win their RPI would certainly jump.

  45. Ray Natili, by the way, was one of the three refs the ACC suspended after that Duke-FSU game.

“‘He got off the floor and ran in my face,’ Johnson told The Tallahassee Democrat. ‘I just put my hands up. He [bumped] me and I didn’t even do nothing. That just lets you know who [the officials] wanted to win the game from there.’

The intentional foul and erroneous technical were Johnson’s fourth and fifth fouls, and Johnson fouled out with 13 points and 11 rebounds in 14 minutes of play… The Blue Devils were not called for a personal foul in the last 9:23 of regulation and picked up one foul in overtime.”

I’m not blaming the refs. But you are naive if you think certain refs and certain coaches don’t have certain “arrangements.” And if a coach won’t bend the rules to recruit, he certainly won’t make financial donations to referees. It’s just something else that Maryland has to overcome, that’s all. My favorite is the phantom fouls against Duke players that stop fast breaks and lay-ups. That’s a classic tactic.

  46. Locomotive Breath, you Dookies need to let go with the “cheering while a player was hurt BS”. People were cheering because Neal made a three point shot. The taunting was aimed at Wojo, Chris Collins and Coach K for their usual crying that one of their babies was down and no foul was called. No foul was called cause it was a good pick. What they should cry about is that nobody on Duke’s defense talked and let Smith know a pick was on his left.

And back in the day Duke fans let loose on Juan Dixon and his parent’s drug issues, so don’t even start. Cameron Indoor Stadium is actually Jaun Dixon’s house…and part of it belongs to Joe Smith.

Meanwhile, I don’t think anyone on this site has supported the “F-U Singler” chant. Been discussed. Ya’ll won the game we know it move on…and hope we don’t play you in the ACC Tournament…don’t think you can take us three in a row.

  47. Locomotive Breath you’re so short sighted not even funny. Do you forget that the Crazies insulted DJ Strawberry until your sacred cheer sheets said he was off limits? Or just go back into the 80s and early 90s (J.R. Reid? Bags with white powder thrown on the floor? Condoms thrown on the floor?)and see all the stuff they pulled in Cameron before the current front running geeks joined in hoping only to be on T.V. As I recall Coach K was around for all of that and did nothing.

You’re preaching to the choir here for the most part, if you could read you would see that most of us are pissed with what was said, so go back to the Duke Basketball Report or whatever other crap website you normally spend your time showing your love for Greg Paulus.

  48. Anybody who thinks GV’s fouls were legit is insane. He had 2 touch fouls and a “charge” call. You have got to be kidding me. 3 of his fouls were with other Terps around him and could have been called on either one of them but they gave them to Grevis. If it were Duke the fouls would have been on the bench player not in foul trouble. That crap happens all the time. Why didn’t we get that benefit on ANY of those plays? The refs completely blew that game.
The foul count may only look like 26 to 22 but you have to evaluate the timing and legmitacy of the fouls. Grevis sitting and having to sub in and out every other play had a MAJOR impact on the flow of our game. Did anyone miss the Zubak leveling of Neal under the hoop for 2 points with a no call followed by 2 touch fouls on the terps? WTF? Go watch that game tape again. How many free points did Hernderson get from push offs which should have been wiped off the board?

  49. Locomative,
Coach K pays the refs and we don’t. We have to result to more heavy handed tactics. Why did Boozer’s mom sue and get $50,000 from the MD athletic department for getting hit by an empty water bottle? Talk about a class act! Explain that one.

  50. For a team thats “not our rival”, Duke fans seem to take a lot of interest in what happens here.

  51. No kidding Raj…no kidding…bunch of punk asses.

  52. I dont know if anyones already seen this, but si.com ranked college basketball’s toughest places to play. We’re number 1! Duke is 2.

    http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/for_the_record/posts/53381-the-list-the-five-toughest-college-basketball-crowds?eref=fromSI

  53. That list is a joke? We’re “crude, disgusting and dangerous” and Duke is well versed in scouting reports. Really? I missed where it said that Juan Dixons parents died of AIDS on his scouting report.

  54. We played a valiant game last night. With Vasquez severely limited by those wonderful refs, the rest of the team fought really hard and almost pulled it out. I’m extremely disappointed but very hopeful for the next game and those to follow.

About Mosely and why he was left in the game only to get torched repeatedly by Henderson…Tucker, as good as he was against UNC, he was just as far off last night. When a guy misses a FT a foot to the right it’s apparent that he is having a bad night. Although Mosely wasn’t giving us much on offense he was a better option then Tucker at the time. We don’t have anyone on this squad that can hang with Henderson so leaving Mosely on him was basically by default.

The minute Vasquez came off the bench I could see that he was going to try too hard to get us the win. Immediately he started taking bad shots because he was out of rhythm and was just simply trying too hard to do everything. I certainly can’t blame any player for trying too hard. It’s just a shame that he was put in the position that he was. Tough one…

I would have loved to see Burney get in that game last night. I think he would have brought an intimidation factor that we have lacked all year. His ability to block shots and rebound defensively could have allowed us to keep it close there down the stretch. I really can’t believe he didn’t even get the warmups off.

Anyone currently attending dook is too young to have heard about or remember some of the stuff that has gone on down there in the past. More power to them if they feel like they are upstanding gentlemen/ladies at Cameron Indoor, but at least we all know that it is just the opposite. I can see why they complained about our fans cheering about a downed player (I feel like 25% of the cheers were probably for that play). I too was thinking that we should have eased up a bit after th shot went down and it was apparent that the dude was hurt. Our fans (students) do tend to be classless and it is only getting worse in recent memory. It’s truly a shame. Watching UMD home games sometimes makes me cringe more than watching dook home games.

I understand people getting on Gary because we are in the same position we have been for years now with less than excellent players and because we are out matched by most teams we play. UMD is too good a basketball school to be it’s current position. Some of that has to do with his clean recruiting and his refusing to compromise his standards. That’s been discussed to death around here. However, if anyone is disappointed with this season and Gary’s coaching of this team, I think you’re way out of line. To be sitting where we are in the ACC and possibly in the NCAA tournament right now is shocking! This team is over achieving in every way and Gary has done an incredible job orchestrating this team to wins. He makes some mistakes (in and out with Greivis last night was a bad decision and trying that zone for a minute is pretty questionable as well) but as a whole he’s made all the right decisions this season and has clearly out coached almost every other coach in the league. If he gets this team to March Madness they may actually change UMD’s name to The University of Garyland.

  55. WILL SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!

I don’t know why this has come over me now, but I have a definite need to know what Gary is saying when the TV shows him wheeling around and gesticulating to the bench and saying something. Is he complaining?, is he pointing something out?

Is there anyone who knows for sure and if you’re there, please let me know

  56. How does everyone know that the cheering wasn’t for a good clean pick set by Dave Neal followed by a three. I personally loved the pick by Neal. I would never want a player to get injured but a nice tough solid, legal pick can be applauded, right?

  57. Typical Duke fan. Believe me, living in Raleigh you can pick them out from a mile away. The worst thing about them is they have never played a sport. The rest of us all played as kids and in high school. They were never interested in sports. Okay, maybe golf but nothing that requires busting your ass.

Cheering for an injured player? Are you stupid? That was a classic pick and then the same guy rolls down and drills a three in a tight game. How can you not cheer? Now maybe in Cameron they wouldn’t if it wasn’t on the cheer chart. How lame is it you have to have choreographed cheers? Your emotion should make you cheer not number five on the chant chart.

Get back to your own site where you can take turns making each other feel superior.

  58. OK Terpsfan, the Fish to the rescue.
I get to go to away games pretty much when I want to, meaning I get tickets and usually right behind the bench. I don’t take advantage of this like some Top Terp Clubers do, but thats my issue. Recently I have been to BC and Juan Dixon Indoor Stadium and was supposed to go to G Tch this year but missed it.
A couple of times recently I have sat literally right behind Gary and get to hear him the whole game. Surprisingly he is not as foul mouthed as advertised, at least not the times I have been there. There is an occasional G-d Dammit or asshole, but not much else.
What he is normally doing when he turns to the bench and spews is vehemently pointing something out, for example: to paraphrase he may say, “dammit we worked on that switch in practice for three days and he / we missed it.” or “this is why you always have to box out” or something to that effect, mostly referring to things they have worked on but were not done. Sometimes he is directing it towards an assistant and sometimes a player. So I guess he’s kind of complaining while pointing things out.

  59. RicksTerps I admire that you live in a place where you have to deal with those fans on a daily and hourly basis while holding your head high for Terps Fans. I’ll bet one of your favorite days of the year is after the second round of the NCAA’s when another highly rated Duke team full of AA’s bombs out of the tourney.

  60. Thank you, Fish

  61. Now that I”m semi-recovered from the loss and able to converse without being totally unreasonable, here’s my take in follow-up to some of your excellent points:

    1) All-in-all a heroic performance. However, we let one get away. I thought Gary sat GV way too long. I get what he was doing. But like I’ve said before, with this team being a heavy underdog we have to GO FOR THE JUGULAR. Gary would’ve done the right thing if we were equal in talent. But we had a team better than us tied in the 2nd half with the crowd into it. We have to GO FOR IT. If GV fouls out, he fouls out. What’s there to lose? We’re expected to lose and we lost anyways.

    2) Most guys on posting on the blog are educated, reasonable people. But please guys, let’s not be reasonable and intelligent when it comes to Dook. They do not DESERVE that courtesy from anyone. Let’s be ignorant, rude a**holes when it comes to Dook. The Henderson compliments MAKE ME SICK. This is the same guy that committed a felony on a UNC player a couple of years ago. I rather like the “Rat”, “Albino”, “Pukus”, etc. That’s all they deserve.

    3) Eric Hayes has now played two strong games in a row against the best competition. I feel very encouraged by this. I hope he has turned a corner. He has to shoot more than Bowie and Tucker. He just has to.

    4) This game showed why Tucker was in Gary’s doghouse. He is our worst perimeter defender. The guy’s in a popcorn machine as soon as he sees the ball above waist-level. He is worthless if not hitting his shots. Kinda reminds me of how Mike Jones was. Except Mike was of course a much better shooter.

    5) The question of “How did Mosley score those points in HS?” is an intriguing one. It’s not like he used his height and strength against smaller players. He played in the Baltimore Catholic League for Christ’s sake. (Personal experience tells me the competition is pretty damn good.) I think he’s focusing 100% of his energy into defending and boarding. We will be pleasantly surprised next season.

    6) I am very, very, very worried about the NC State game. They are a tough out at home and are bigger than us. But mostly I worried about our energy level after two emotional games. It’s gonna be really tough. We will have to play the game of our lives.

  62. I know this is totally pathetic on my part, but I really do feel euphoric “when another highly rated Duke team full of AA’s bombs out of the tourney.” Even reading Harry’s statement that I just quoted made me laugh.

I know it speaks my little man, “I come from small swarthy people” complex, but my disdain for Dook resides in the pit of my stomach. When I meet Dook grads, I try to move away as quickly as possible.

What’s interesting is that many Dook grads I meet try to act ashamed of their Dookiness. Like they know that everyone immediately is put off by them. So they always get this “Yeah, I went there because it’s a good school but I know that everyone there…except me…is a total f-nut.”

At least MD grads don’t talk down there school to try and fit in. When Dookies are all together it’s like animals of the same kind wallowing in their own shit at the zoo. It’s such a strange, maladjusted club they’ve got.

Honestly, if either of my kids are good enough to get into a school like Dook, I won’t let them go there. If they can get into Dook, they’re good enough to get into an Ivy, Northwestern, or Stanford. Who would want to go to Dook? I just don’t get it.

  63. Eddie – good post except I just can’t buy into the Mosely commentary. Example: “He’s focusing 100% of his energy into defending and boarding….pleasantly surprised next year”.

That’s just not realistic. Most of us have played BB for years ourselves. Even if we were good defenders, playing organized BB and were called upon to concentrate on D…….we’d still have a palpable “shot” when the occasion occurred. This isn’t football where you are a linebacker of tackle and you play D exclusively. This is BB and you play both ends of the court. Not many teams can afford to have a “defensive specialist” on the team. Perhaps in brief moments at the end of a half or the game itself. When we look at Mosely’s offensive attempts they are visibly feeble. No, it just doesn’t make sense with his credentials. But something is wrong. One thing is he’s 6′6″ and many of his shots or put-backs are in crowded conditions and against much taller opponents. As such, these turn out to be ill-advised shots. However, even when he’s wide open he just looks “physically impaired” shooting. His mechanics are no where to be seen.

Much as I like the kid….he’s a “liabilithy” especially this time of the year with this team.
Yes, there’s spots for him to be in there but not as a starter and seldomly as a finisher.
I” take Tucker as a spotty shooter and average defender over Mosely every time.
Someone tell me where I am wrong. He would not even be the 10th man on Duke, UNC, Wake or CLemson…..and some of the rest.

This subject deserves more attention than some are willing to render.

  64. Mosely was a 4 time All-Met in Baltimore, capping his senior season with POY. He broke the Alhambra Tournament scoring record playing against the top Catholic HS teams on the east coast. The kid has the goods.

Just because he looks 25 years old doesn’t mean that he isn’t still just a 19 year old kid. Missing bunnies under the rim is mental. The kid hit enough Js playing against the best HS players in the country to demonstrate that he can.

He is a freshman. Juan (even after a redshirt) and Lenny were no prizes their freshman years. Neither was Booth. Yes, Smith was but that’s it. He doesn’t play in some free-wheeling system that is designed for him to score points like Kevin Durrant at UT did. He is being asked to fill a role, a tough role, and he is doing about as good as any ACC freshman can. He is guarding the other team’s top scoring threat. What do you expect from him? In a different system, he’d do different things.

  65. Geez.

This is the first time I have souped since the loss last night and the 280 comments I skimmed through were not pretty. A pretty common topic of complaint has been the unfair reffing, but I thought the game was well-officiated for the most part. Yes, they did miss a few calls but I think they missed some calls on the Terps ie. Bowie catching a 3/4 court outlet pass and taking 3 or 4 out of control steps. Perhaps he was obbling the ball but I don’t have replay on the TV I watched it on. The only gripe I had with the officiating is how they tightened up towards the end of the game, one would think they would loosen up if anything.

I also saw several attacks on Mosely, which I have to disagree with. I thought he did a good job on Henderson for the most part. Tucker was guarding Henderson when he threw down that monster dunk and if I’m not mistaken, Henderson’s little spurt coincided with Mosely’s exit due to his tweaked ankle (that F U SIngler chant was embarrassing to listen to, especially for a senior in high school who is considering being a part of that student section next year). Yes, he didn’t have a good night on the offensive end by any means, but he’s out there to neutralize Duke’s best player, which I thought he did a good job of doing.

We as a fanbase can’t dwell on this loss and as a fan, I really hope that the Terps don’t experience a hangover, a common occurrence after a hardfought loss. NC State is without a doubt a must win (part v?) unless we want to rely on beating Wake at home and UVA on the road. NC State gave Wake a run for the money in Winston Salem and the Wolfpack have surged lately, much like the Terps. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a bad feeling about the game on Sunday. Our only ACC road win is a one-point win against Ga. Tech. who is 1-12 in the ACC. This Terp squad is a different team than they were two weeks ago but this game at NC State is going to be a TOUGH one to win.

Unfortunately for us, we can’t put on a jersey and help this team ourselves so we just have to root our hearts off come Sunday and hope for the best.

    FEAR THE TURTLE!!!!

  66. Gerry, your point is well taken. Believe me, my TV takes so much screaming from me because of Mosley’s missed layups and awkward looking jumper. But Wheels has a very legitimate point. When your entire mental concentration is based on stopping your guy, it’s gonna take away from your offense. If Mosley was an upperclassman, he undoubtedly wouldn’t have these troubles because he would already “know” he can score at this level. But he is a freshamn. Mosley still has a mental block with his scoring at this level because he hasn’t done it yet. I really believe its a mater of time. My best guess is it will come as he learns to relax and play good D at the same time. Right now he’s so focused on guarding his man he’s a hyper out there. That will hurt your shooting touch.

  67. Can born ready do this?

  68. To give you a taste of what it is like to live in Raleigh, the local CBS station didn’t televise Survivor tonight (my wife was about to drive to the station and kidnap the programming director). It instead had the Wake/NC State game. With all these local teams it happens more than a few times during the year.

The other thing you get is how important the ACC tournament is down here. The Terps usually go in wanting to win a couple games to get in the dance or improve their seed. Down here it is life or death. Roy didn’t embrace that at first but he is coming around.

I watched that game and both teams played well. NC State has some nice bigs we will have to deal with. Wake is just so athletic. We need to bring it on Sunday night. Our guards should cause them issue. I don’t think they have anyone who can handle GV. They are late getting to the three point line as well. Hayes and Tucker can hurt them.

Bottom line, we have to keep playing with a high motor.

    Don’t let up boys!

  69. Wheels and Eddie –

I can buy into the following scenario:

You have a average orf above player who’s got size, athleticism, plays good D and can score 8-10 pts a game. You want to make him a defensive “specialist” and you get it into his head that’s his main function and contribution to the team’s goals.

    That can probably work.

However, go back to Wheels’ first paragraph…..”Mosely was 4 times All- Met, POY and broke Alhambra scoring record”. Add to that he’s the 2nd all time HS scorer in Maryand history. Now, I know this subject has been belabored to excess but there’s no blurry line. With those credentials ……shooting and scoring is instinctive almost automatic. It is “IN” you. It can’t be turned off very easily if at all. and you won’t lose the touch before age 45 or later. i am past 50 and can still shoot the J and the 3 ball and I don’t look bad doing it either.

My most convincing argument is this. Why would you want to take a scoring ‘machine” like that, especially with our teams near feeble perimeter shooting, and convert such a player to a defensive “specialist”?
Yes, we are weak down low but Mosely isn’t big enough to help that much. Sure, he’s a scrapper and yes he’s only a freshman but putting him in that role exposes him to the league’s “man-childs” and he’s getting eaten alive down low and has almost no chance to score. He’s had “Nike” stamped on his forehead and it’s now hard to remove.

This is not beating up on Mosely. It’s more like coming to his rescue. The mission given him is noble but still questionable and the outcome is not achieving the desired result.

Residual damage is evident. Mosely didn’t get those credentials on Defense. In football comparison it’s like taking Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and the like and converting them to a defensive back. What a waste.

  70. Not sure how this hasn’t been posted yet:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erpPU04ZrcY

If MD ended up winning this game, Dave Neal goes down as a legend

  71. The whole Mosley thing reminds me a bit of Mouton. If I remember correctly, he was Tulanes leading scorer, lighting it up a little bit. And when he came here he was the consumate role, hustle player. Diving for loose balls, rebounding, little stuff. I loved Mouton. I think Mosley is doing great as well.

  72. One more vote for Mosley emerging as the next Mouton. I agree.

  73. Hah! The Neal pick on Nolan, followed by a 3-pt pop is now in my top 10 favorite terp plays of all time…..up there with Nickolaus popping the 3 to win the NCAA tourney game or Steve B’s classic steal of Jason Williams.

Wheels, I have never met such humble dookies. They are all arogant sh*ts.

Mosely’s missed lay-ups are at the top of my frustration list this season. Obviously, the kid is suffering through a case of Freshmen nerves. I could make those shots. When criticizing the misses, however, remember this – Mosely is putting himself in great position to score. Putting yourself in position for a layup is the hard part and Mosely does that (which makes the misses that much more frustrating, perhaps). When the shots start falling, and they will, his confidence will grow and more shots will start falling.

  74. A quick and final comment on Mosely, we were at the game do any of you remember he was playing with a twisted or sprained ankle. Before this game we were singing his praises for all he added to our team. He would not have had too play on it as much if our favorite knucklehead learned how to play fouls on him.

  75. Gerry…

I see your point, but I think the QB comparison is a bit off. I think it’s more like a two-way HS football star at the LB/RB position being switched back and forth to fill needs. Let’s take Derrick Williams at PSU. He came out the #1 HS prospect in the nation playing QB, RB, and DB at Eleanor Roosevelt. When he got to PSU, they had him returning kicks and playing a bit at the wideout. His sophmore year, they play him exclusively at the wideout. His junior and senior years, they play him at RB, WR, KR, and punt return spots. Now, at least this all happened on one side of the ball; but that’s a lot to ask for mentally. Personally, I am glad the kid didn’t live up to his creds…because he f-ed MD after they fired his pops for being a bum at work. That’s neither here nor there, though.

Look, I think the point is that the jump from even the highest levels of HS ball to starting in the ACC is a huge jump. I don’t think Mosely thought he’d be the D specialist when he got here, but he might be the best MD has. Gerry’s right…Mosely was a scorer in HS. That’s what got him the accolades. Now he’s being asked to sacrifice that to be the D stopper…a role that maybe he’s never been asked to do. That has to affect your total game. Next year, he might get back into the O mindset and flourish. It might be like riding a bike, except now he might be more comfortable playing D, too.

Now, we can debate the coaching merits of putting Mosely in that position in the first place. That’s a different debate altogether. Maybe that is the point Gerry is making.

  76. All true….but Mouton could also score…..and he was not all Met, POY, 2nd highest scorer in MD HS History. Scoring was not “IN” him like it is in Mosely.

I believe Mosely’s “offensive psyche” could be seriously damaged in this role. It’s one thing to miss shots consistently, it’s another to look awkward shooting. If we didn’t know his credentials and watchd him this year, then his past credentials were revealed to us, we’d say “you’re nuts….no way could a guy that shoots like that have those kind of credentials”.

Perhaps some of you think this is dead air . I don’t. Montana or Peyton wouldn’t have turned out to be All-Pro defensive backs after the switch either.

    Desrves more discussion

  77. On another note, did you all see that Skins landed Haynesworth with a 7yr/100M contract? Do the Skins ever learn? He’s heading into his 8th year in the league…at the D tackle spot. 7 years? At that coin?

I know the Skins need better D Line play, but they just don’t seem to understand, even after all of their failures with overpaying ageing players, the damage that a contract like that does to them long term.

The NBA is borrowing $175 to help 15 teams meet operating deficits. The economy contracted at 6.2% in Q4 of 2008. We’re statistically in the steepest recession since The Great Depression. The Arena League suspended operations for this season due to money concerns.

The point is that any pro sports owner operating with a salary cap cannot expect normal/scheduled salary cap increases from year to year. This type of fiscal irresponsibility just shows how loopy Snyder is.

Hell…how long did it take the Skins to clear the Deion Sanders cap money? It’s moves like this, instead of building through the draft, that make me less and less likely to root for the Skins ever again.

  78. I like Mosley. He has a high basketball IQ. We have have plenty of shooting guards, what we don’t have is a tough defender and rebounder. That role has him starting and playing significant minutes in his freshmen year. He is doing what his coach wants him to do.

I agree, some of his shots look off. I attribute this to the fact that he rarely shoots and he has a case of the yips (any golfer knows the term).

Over the next three years you will see him become more of a scorer. Let’s remember, Mouton was a prolific scorer coming out of high school. He took the role we gave him and ran with it.

  79. Mouton was also a prolific scorer coming out of Tulane. I didnt know Mouton was an All-American
“A high school all-American from Rayne, La., he played two seasons at Tulane before transferring to Maryland.”

  80. Jeremy/Gregg-
While I have nothing but the utmost respect for you guys and all your efforts to run this blog, frankly I’m upset that you havent addressed the mutiple calls in this thread to do something about the racial comments that were thrown around on this site. Not saying/doing anything when you are in a position of authority as moderators, in my respectful opinion, is akin to a tacit approval. While I’m not technically savvy enough to know whether you can block MarkMax’s ip address or otherwise prevent him from posting on this site, I’d think you could at least remove the offensive comments posted on the last thread (especially the epithet posted on 2/26 at 12:56).

    Thanks guys.

    Most respectfully,
    B.Stinson

  81. On the subject of Mouton. heres an interview from January; not the greatest interview.
    http://www.playersvoice.com/sports-pages/audio-interviews.html

  82. Can’t compare football and basketball. Not even remotely similiar. If Mosley decides to spend time working on his mid-range game, then his offense will be fine. Like others have noted, he already gets in good position to finish plays and gets a lot of ‘hustle’ baskets. And by the amount of PT he’s rec’d in his freshman season, I definetly think he has the mindset to get better.

I like the Mouton comparison for him — but here’s another one I want to throw out there: DJ Strawberry:

    - Both known for defense/ hustle during freshman season
    - Neither a go to scorer (forget HS for a minute) who had trouble converting “easy” buckets — remember when Strawberry got his dunk blocked by the rim during the Cuse (?) game in the NCAA tournement
    - Both fan favorite/ Gary’s guys

Strawberry put the time in to make himself an all around player, great on defense AND offense. I expect Mosley to do the same. You can already start to see him starting to put together the pieces (when he took Henderson to the basket a couple times on Wednesday). The kid will be fine. Just wait

  83. Off Topic:

Adam Schefter of NFL.com is reporting that Ray Lewis has broken off talks with the Baltimore Ravens due to the slow nature of the process. Rut roh

  84. I am nervous about all of the remaining games. We are projected to lose all 3 according to Ken Pomeroy’s stats. It is our toughest remaining game (34% chance of victory). Wake 36% and UVA 48%.

    http://kenpom.com/team.php?y=2009&team=Maryland

The team will need to overperform to get any victories, but they can do it! GO TERPS

  85. NC State has also been playing well recently, losing a lot of close games. Combine that with our road woes and Sunday scares the crap out of me

  86. Chrs0049 – I’m on the same boat, add to it the fact that they might come out a little down after losing to Duke…this is going to be a tough game.

  87. Motion to ban B. Stinson.

  88. Agree with most of you on NC State game. It is gonna be a really tough one to pull out. If there is such a thing as “basketball biorhythms”, this game is a down one for us. I am concerned that we will lack the necessary energy. As we all know, this team cannot cruise to a conference win. They have to be at their best all the time. I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Let’s not sell the GREAT BYRON MOUTON short. He was very highly recruited and only went to Tulane to stay close to home. He was recruited hard by many SEC schools. Ironically, Byron led Tulane in scoring as soon as he got there and had somewhat of a reputation as a “selfish” player who took too many bad shots. It is a testament to the man’s character that he did a complete 180 after coming to Maryland to fit in with the team. Remember he didn’t start right away with us. He was coming off the bench behind Danny Miller (Mickey D) and eventually beat him out for the 3 spot. Byron will always be one of my favorites. He sacrificed for the good of the team.

  89. Scared? Scared? C’mon now Soupers, fear is the path to the dark side. Of course I hear the darkside has great food so it may not be all bad.

  90. I’M WITH STINSON. WHERE IS THE FUCKING OUTRAGE?

  91. Yeah, Sphincter thanks for the cheap laugh at my expense.

You are right. I must have been mistaken when I thought it was hypocritical for a blog composed of fans of a team comprised predominantly of young black men to sit idly by as racial slurs are thrown around.

  92. Off subject a little here but congrats go out to our very own Stevie Blacke for tying an NBA-record for assists in one quarter with 14. He just came back from a shoulder injury making it even more impressive. I have the NBA package and watch most of Stevie’s games and have become a psuedo Blazers fan in the process. The way everyone on that team treats Stevie as a leader is most gratifying to see. Great job.

  93. Blacke?

  94. Blake…and he tied John Lucas’ one quarter assist record. Record setting Terps dishing dimes in the Association. Chea

  95. Regarding Stinson’s point, two things: (1) Jeremy and Gregg are a class act. I’ll bet it’s hard to police the site during a game. If the jerk who posted racial slurs showed up under ordinary circumstances, they’d block him, I’m sure. And I’ll bet you won’t see posts from that guy again. (2) The silence from this end has probably been a deliberate choice by most of us–why give attention to someone like that? We’ve had other creeps show up on the site and they’ve disappeared when they were ignored.

Vampire, on the other hand, should post more. I miss him.

  96. First thing is the racial stuff has to go, second the pick on Nolan Smith was fairly clean but the kid got hurt so anything further on the topic is crass at best. I want no one hurt. Lastly some of you miss the fact that it was a great game to watch. Sucks that the Terps lost but it was a great game. Team played well and could have won it. So now there is a trip to NC State that is a must win. Should be interesting to see like someone said NC State is tough at home and rarely is not in any game. Season is not NIT yet but it is only one loss away definitely.

  97. I can’t believe what has been said about Mosley on this board. It’s not like this guy was a 5 star recruit. I think he has played beyond expectations. I have been to every game this year and Mosley gets so many turnovers/stops, he is a big play kind of guy. Tucker can score when no D is being played. However tucker showed us against duke he is way to inconsistent to be on the floor in a starting roll. Did you miss when he missed 2 transition layups? Like most people on this board I have a special place in my heart for tucker after unc yes, but I know for a fact that Mosley is acc quality and is a huge asset to this team. He can shut people down and plays every play like it is his last. You have to understand Henderson is crazy man I have not seen a better player in Comcast since al Thornton my freshman year. He is the real deal projected to be the 7 pick in this years NBA draft, lets not forget most of Henderson’s points were scored when Mosley had a bum ankle. Also we all need to swallow one huge pill and understand those dagger threes were contested shots. I was in the 1st row of the student section and I am here to tell you they were deep and over defenders hands. I hate Duke so much and I wanted to win this game so bad, but plan and simple they beat us with those huge shots.

Another issue I want to touch on is about the student section. I understand that the FU singler was over the top. But lets be frank I have attended a Duke away game and it my friends it is no better. Unfortunately our acts were caught on TV. When I visited Cameron indoor for the 40 point beat down by Duke, I heard many racists comments pointed towards vaz. You know they chant vulgar things to him in Spanish. Come on people if you have ever dealt personally with any of the Duke crazies you know there is no love lost between the two fan bases. You learn freshman year this is not a rivalry this is a WAR!!!

  98. Re racial slurs, I didn’t see them. There were so many comments, that I didn’t catch everything.

However, if there are slurs on here, that is totally unacceptable. Totally. Shame on any of you that would post racial slurs and hide behind your anonymity.

On another note, Al V is back! Good to see you on here Al. Lots of love on The Soup.

  99. And by the way, the dude, MarkMax 33, just posted on this thread.

  100. Since Gerry wants more discussion:
My take on Mosley is he is going to get much better offensively. I think he does have good shooting skills, they are just awry right now. Having said that Gerry I can understand why you are concerned, sometimes his shot looks way off.
Remember he started this season with a severe ankle injury which set him back a bit and then was thrust into a more rebound / defense role. I am sure he will be working on the Juan regiment of 500 jump shots a day in the offseason. Gary absolutely loves the guy because of attitude and work ethic and is going to work with him to get him where he needs to be. So I expect big things from Sean, even exceeding the great Byron Mouton.

  101. Article from Wilbon of the Post:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/26/AR2009022603862.html?hpid=sec-sports

  102. From Joe Lunardis chat:

Brad (Chicago, IL): Joe, Great job every year! Miami, VT, Maryland – in your opinion, who will get in and who will be left out based on the rest of the season and ACC tourney? Right now, MD is out and Miami and VT are in. You think it’ll finish that way?

Joe Lunardi: (3:45 PM ET ) I think VaTech makes it, Miami goes right to the edge and Maryland misses.

    Oh well.

  103. Thanks for the link Geoff.

Look at this shot across the bow…

“I can understand how some Maryland supporters could be disappointed at the team’s fortunes since the Terrapins won the NCAA title in 2002, but the sense of entitlement many express is unbelievably shortsighted and delusional. Remind me, one more time, of how many national championships Maryland had won before Williams arrived? Remind me, one more time, how many Final Four trips Maryland had made before Williams arrived? Remind me, please, of who left a comfortable job with a perennial 20-win team at Ohio State to come bail out his alma mater, whose program was about to receive sanctions just short of the death penalty.

Maybe their memories are short; mine isn’t. Maryland basketball after Len Bias’s death was on life-support. It was nothing. And now, many of those who sat and cheered the resurrection think Maryland is Kentucky, or North Carolina, or Kansas, or, dare I say it, Duke?

They think Maryland has been granted basketball royalty status and Williams should pay penance? These fools better get a good look at the Notre Dames and Nebraskas and all the other athletic programs that ran off fine coaches, only to sink into sub-.500 seasons. They’d better, as the kids say, recognize. “

  104. Glad to see Lunardi has us out. Whenever we are in the field we seem to lose. I anticipate a close with at NC St

  105. Lundardi’s bracketology changes from night to night.

  106. I, for one, think Wilbon is spot on.

  107. Doesn’t matter what Lunardi says. If we win out and win a game in the ACC Tournament, we can’t be denied. Even though we may not be favored to win any of the remaining games, they are all eminently winnable.

  108. I think if we win out we are in. 9-7 in ACC should do it, right? If we are 8-8 we will need an ACC tourney win. It would be nice to be confident on Selection Sunday for once!

  109. Quick takes on the Mosley and NCST conversations from an “outside the box” approach:

If you’re UNC or Duke and you could pick one guy off the UMd roster to add to yours, who would you take? Don’t factor in team needs, just base it soley on talent. I’ll give it a shot. I’d consider in this order: LM, Mosley, and then mabye AB. GV is tempting, but I think I’d pass on him. Believe it or not, Dave Neal would also be a strong consideration as well.

Sunday’s game at State, GW needs get his players thinking of this like the beginning of a series of play-in games for the tourney. Beat State, you’re in. Lose to State, you’re out. Ok, say we beat NCST. Next up Wake. Beat Wake, you’re in. Lose, you’re out. Ok, if we beat Wake we’re 8-7. Now UVA, got to take them to get to 9-7, We’re more than likely in, but we better treat Tourney game #1 like another play-in game. Now, just grab one win in the Tourney, two would be even better, pack your bags Terps, you’re definitely dancing.

Its JWB time for this team for sure. If they can pull off a Kaze and WWO, wouldn’t that make our season. Heck, they could lose in the first round of the Dance and I think we’d all still be happy campers.

  110. To B. Stinson and all other readers:

The offending comments were removed yesterday.

The features of WordPress as far as I can tell, do not allow me to ban someone from the site. I only have the power to remove comments.

Gregg and I are saddened that something like this happened on the site. Please do not mistake our lack of action to imply tacit complicity. Neither of us were aware of the comments until well after they occurred. We try, but we are unable to keep up with all of the goings on at Turtle Soup. As you know, this site is a labor of love and neither Gregg nor I read every comment.

  111. Not that I really care much for Coach K but here were his comments from the WIlbon article:

Asked last night about the heat Williams is taking, Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said: “I love Gary. We’ve had some battles over a lot of years, but I love Gary Williams. I think the world of him as a basketball coach. He, Jim Boeheim and I . . . we’re all old farts. We got in this a long time ago for the right reasons. I know how hard Gary has worked, what he did to build this.”

The committee says they don’t look at conference affiliations but I don’t see the ACC getting more than 8 and the final number may only be 7. So how do you differentiate 3 ACC bubble teams if they all finish at .500.
Miami beat Wake, swept BC but went 0-4 to NC, Duke and Clemson and split with us.
VT has a tough stretch ahead of them and could finish 7-9 which would probably knock them out. They split with Clemson and beat Miami on the road.
Terps go 1-3 against NC, Duke and Clemson and split with Miami and beat VT.

This is another reason why the unbalanced schedule stinks.

  112. this is a duke student!

  113. Jeremy, kudos to you and Gregg for all the work you do for us.

  114. “They’d better, as the kids say, recognize. ”
    THIS IS GARYLAND FOREVER

  115. I just let him have it on his sorry excuse for a blog

  116. I really fail to see why the Dorkies spend time to have websites about us when we’re not their rival. Maybe I’m just old school. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy beating Duke but for me it’s all about beating North Carolina. When I started watching UMD in the early ’70’s UNC and NCST were the teams to beat. That damn four corners offense and David Thompson leaping outta the building.

  117. Folks, Jeremy and I have been out of the loop the past two days. My apologies. We are going to address the situation regarding racial slurs. Obviously, we don’t condone racial slurs and they have no place on this site. We have no desire to ban anyone from posting here, but please avoid saying dumb things so we won’t have to.

  118. Gregg, if we can get banned for saying dumb things, I’m definitly on the bubble. My stupidity is second to none. :-)

With that as a lead in, I’ll take a stab at JohnE’s question: “If you’re UNC or Duke and you could pick one guy off the UMd roster to add to yours, who would you take? Don’t factor in team needs, just base it soley on talent.”

    1) GV is at the top of the list. He’s an NBA talent. Any program in the country would take him.

    2) Milbourne is the clear #2. dook had no answer for him.

    3) third is a close call. Hayes, Tucker, Burney, Gregory, Mosely, and AB all have their moments. I would give the nod to Mosely, but just because he’s a frosh.

  119. Looking at it the other way, if we could pick from UNC’s roster I’d sure like to have Ed Davis and Deon Thompson. Those two posts would give our team a whole new look!

As for Dook, I wouldn’t even take Grant Hill or Christian Laettner. I’ll take my chances with Dave Neal instead.

  120. Eddie

Dave Neal over Grant Hill. Makes sense.

    I concur.

  121. DBR – Brief anecdote regarding Md/UNC. Back then, after Tom McMillen showed up at Maryland on the first day of school after having committed to UNC, I went down from College Park to Chapel Hill to interview for grad school. I intereviewed with the head of the graduate studies program in English. It seemed to go fine. When it was done I got up to go and he said, “By the way, what do you think of this Tom McMillan business?” I said, “Fantastic! Lefty is gonna kick Dean’s butt!” I sent in my application as soon as I got back to Maryland and was rejected as fast as they could turn it around in the mails. If fedex has existed then, they would have used it to reject me faster. I pulled some strings and got into UNC, but the son of a bitch NEVER let up on me. Then he got cancer. He had to take a leave of absence for a semester. He came back, clearly a dying man. I was required to take his bibliography and methodology class. I hid in the back of the room on the first day. He came in using a walker, bloated with steroids, wheezing. He looked down at the roster, saw my name, searched for me with bloodshot eyes, and said, “So . . . how’s Tom McMillan doing?” Six weeks later he was dead. Hated me to the grave. Good story, huh?

  122. Wow kaze. You’re an asshole.

  123. Thanks, Stevend!

  124. Right on gregg and jeremy. This racial stuff is all over other blogs it’s nice that this one is different.

Sure wish you could block degenirate racists like faison and markmax though. Kaze is right hope they just go somewhere else

  125. That’s a freakin’ hilarious story, Kaze. He probably thought it was hilarious, too.

  126. Yeesh, Kaze.

  127. Whatup fellas – some interesting comments from Jay Bilas on Gary and the program:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3937220&name=bilas_jay

” Knowing Gary Williams and after spending the day with him at practice Tuesday ahead of Maryland’s game against Duke, I am baffled at the discussion of whether Williams should remain Maryland’s coach. Williams will be in the Naismith Hall of Fame and has put Maryland basketball where Terp fans always have wanted it to be … at the highest level.

Think about this: Maryland is the only ACC program not to have had a losing season over the past 16 seasons. The only one. Duke, North Carolina and the rest all have been drubbed and battered into more losses than wins at least once over that time frame, but not Williams and his teams. That is remarkable. And how about the precipitous decline of the program in the seasons since the 2001 Final Four and the 2002 national championship? Well, Maryland was a bucket away from the Elite Eight in 2003 and has averaged more than 20 wins over the past four years, with the lowest win total being 19 in any one season. While nobody wants to be in the NIT, Maryland has been in postseason play every year with a winning record. Wow. Sounds like the guy has got to go, huh?

I can tell you one thing, if I were the president at Maryland, Williams would be my coach. And if my athletic department acted in the manner Maryland’s athletic department has acted with regard to Williams, the AD’s office would be cleaned out and they all would be in the unemployment line. Their petty and destructive actions have brought unneeded negativity to College Park, and I would not put up with it. I don’t know why Maryland’s alums do.”

  128. Thanks for posting that Billy D. Good stuff indeed. Now, time for a Colt 45…works every time.

  129. I am a little reluctant to continue the Mosely dialogue but Ricksterps (who I respect) says ‘We have plenty of shooting guards”. True….but they don’t SCORE the way everyone else’s shooting guards do. We simply cannot afford to have Mosely in playing D when we need O. Now, we do need Mosely’s D but not at the expense of Offense, which we give away when he’s in.

Ok, so he gets better next year. Unfortunately, we are IN this year . The here and now.
Mosely may become a legend but he ain’t there now and we need points.

I love GW and he’s the coach, but I must question the wisdom of taking this “scoring machine” in Mosely and converting him to a “defensive specialist”. which ya’ll haven’t yet grasped.

Hell, make Pearman or JSK or AB the “D specialist” but not one of the most prolific scorers in MD HS BB history. Dumber than dumb.

    What’s so difficult about that?

I am a Registered Investment Principal and one of our mandates is that “past results is not an indicator of future performance”.

Tell me where I have erred. This is a critical matter. Obviouslly I believe we need Tucker playing 75% . His performance against UNC was no fluke and it needs to be rewarded and developed. While Sean M. may be all ACC next year we are dealing with the hear and now.

  130. The Terps problem has not been GW’s coaching, but his recruiting. You can make a case of bad luck with the highly rated recruits the last five years, or you can come at it from the not enough attention/effort in recruiting angle. Personally I think it is a bit of both.It really doesn’t matter one way or the other. Bottom line: we haven’t had the players or enough of the right type of players ( character plus talent guys) to stay top tier in the ACC.

Hopefully we’re on the way back up with the recruiting efforts which will eventually culminate in better ACC regular season records. The 8-8 bubble stuff is getting old now. We need to get back to winning 11+ games a year. If we get back to that level, we’ll be dancing every single year.

Padgett and J-Dub sound like the right type of players to begin the climb back to top tier ACC.We’re going to need more of them of course; actually we’ll need a steady stream of them to get back to top tier again.

  131. Very valid points Gerry. It comes down to this for me on Mosley. He was basically a four star guy, I don’t think he was even a top 100 guy. I think we have elevated him to a recruit that he wasn’t.

You need guys like him on the team. He is a great worker so he will make the improvements necessary over the next few years to score in this league. Take that to the bank.

Here is his scout.com report. Look at his area of improvement column, looks dead on to me.

    Scout.com Player Evaluation:
    STRENGTHS
    Basketball IQ
    Competitiveness
    Mid-Range Game

    AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
    Ballhandling
    Perimeter Shot
    Speed/Quickness
Old school type player has been a winner with high school and traveling team. He’s got a mature game and scores in a variety of ways. Won’t ‘wow’ you in any aspect but will be a consistent offensive force, dives on the floor for loose balls and is always one of the best players on the court. His game translates well to college.

  132. Jeremy, Thanks for deleting the racial slur. It’s been gnawing at me ever since Markmax slung it. As Stinson and RT Travaloni noted, it was over-the-top outrageous, so much so that it set me momentarily wondering whether I had strayed into an on-line klavern run by that other Duke–David.

I like Mosely. So he blows some freshman layups. He leaves it on the court. What’s not to like?

The Duke game was a good one. The difference was that Duke plays much better perimeter D, and Henderson plays at another level.

  133. “The difference was that Duke plays much better perimeter D than UNC….”

    Too early in the AM.

  134. FF – You asked the question re Mosely . “What’s not to like”?

What he gives us on D is taken away on O. That’s not quite a wash. I really believe Tucker should start so we have a better chance of scoring some points and CT could you the PT like any other “Shooter” to get his rythmn. We desparately need his scoring as our other perimeter shooters/scorers are struggling.

Yes, we need Mosely’s D…..but not necessarily to start games. Maybe better as a finisher.

Really not trying to wear this subject (Mosely) out but we can run with most teams and can sacrifice a little D in favor or more “O”.

  135. looks like the Terps are pretty serious on Lance…still I am confused since we have no scholorship to offer him?

    http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/02/28/maryland-in-hot-pursuit-of-stephenson/#more-12598

  136. Gerrry–Mosley’s a freshman and still learning how to adapt his offensive game to the next level while playing a style of tenacious defense I’m sure he never played in high school. As much as I appreciate Tucker’s outside shot, he’s weak defensively. I anticipate Mosely rediscovering his inner offense by next season at the latest.

  137. I’m all for more offense also. We really struggle to score when the opponent puts a bigger, quicker guy on GV. GV is not quick enough to shake defenders that are as big as he is. But man oh man, Tucker has got to stay on his feet. I can tell he’s trying because he’s usually over-running the play but he’s gotta use his head a little. Tucker has horrible defensive fundamentals. Maybe if we’re behind use Tucker more, if we’re ahead use Mosley more. I don’t have the answer.

  138. NYMets9631, thanks for posting the link to that report. It’s pretty obvious that the coaching staff thinks a ’ship will be available.

  139. I think the player that has disappeared in the 2nd half of the season is Bowie. I think he has looked tentative and awful the past 6-7 games. He is turnover city!

Regarding getting into the NCAA’s, I think the Terps have to get to 20 wins. The past few years when on the bubble, they didn’t have that by selection time and were left off. For some reason 20-10 looks so much better than 19-11.

Therefore, the Terps need to win at least 2 of the next 3 and get past the first round of the ACC Tournmanent. If they do that (especially if 1 of those wins is against Wake), I think they get in. Making a “run” and going 21-10 would be fantastic!

Wake has been upset by lots of teams this year. Let’s make it one more … it’s a home game … we need to win it.

  140. I think Gerry has some legitimate points on the Tucker/Mosley argument. However, I am big on Mosley because he bring a level of toughness that the Terps have not had for a few years. I believe that is an intangible that is very valuable because the rest of the team responds to that attitude. I also like that Mosley brings that toughness without the attitude.

In Tucker’s defense, he has shown that he deserves to play. I think you do have to rotate those two guys. You have to build more confidence in Tucker so that his offense is consistent.

  141. Thanks alot DBR, I wonder who it will be…guess we will have to wait and see

  142. Maryland’s aggressive pursuit of Lance is very telling. I think it means that Dupree is gone baby gone. I just don’t think the open ’ship is GV. There is no way you can bank this heavily that he is going pro. Lance is deciding in the middle of March. No way he announces before that.

It has to be a transfer and that is most likely Dupree.

  143. GV going pro is definitely iffy unless he has something set up in Europe. He’s currently projected the 60th and last pick of a mock draft at NBADraft.net. With several European studs and college underclassmen that might surprisingly declare, there’s a good chance GV might not even be drafted.

  144. Bowie’s good play earlier this year forced teams to plan for him which may be contributing to his point production drop off. But even when he only scored 9 points in the win against Miami he also had 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Against Va Tech he only scored 8 points but had 4 assists and one steal. In the loss at Clemson 8 points & 7 assists. And he was a big part of why we were able to stay in the game against Duke with Greivis on the bench. I believe 10 of Bowie’s 14 points came in the 2nd half.

And you have to go back 9 games (the loss at Duke on 1/24) to find a game when Adrian had more than 2 TO’s. In fact Adrian had zero TO’s in both the UNC and Miami wins.

  145. If GV can get this team to the tournament then he would probably get picked in the 2nd round… who knows if he could make the team though. He would probably be best served by coming back next year and working on his jump shot and making better decisions with the ball. That said, coming from where he came from, I certainly wouldnt blame the kid for taking a shot at the money now either in the NBA or Europe.

  146. I think the transfer is goins to Loyola not Dupree

  147. GV could definitely play in Europe. Unfortunately, his game is ill-suited for the NBA. He excels in college largely because he is so much taller than most guards. His lack of foot-speed will kill him in the NBA. Also, he shoots a “set shot”. In the NBA, he won’t be able to get that shot off without any elevation. GV simply isn’t an NBA player. That doesn’t mean he won’t excel in Europe. His skill set simply doesn’t equate with the NBA. The one asset he has is that he has the heart and desire. Maybe that can get him through in the right situation.

NBA scouts and GM’s don’t put alot of emphasis on how the player’s team is doing. They look at the individual’s skill set and intangibles. Of course winning has something to do with it but it’s a secodary factor compared to the individual player’s potential. GV isn’t gonna raise his stock much if we make the tourney. In fact, he could raise his stock more if we made a deep run in the NIT with GV having great games.

  148. Well, I understand not a lot is put into team performance, but my comment was more based on the assumption that in order for us to make the tournament, GV is gonna have to come up big the rest of the way. That said, I’m still not sure a guy without much of a jump shot will be able to find a place on an NBA roster. If he comes back and works his tail off on the Juan Dixon workout plan, he could make one next year.

  149. WAY OFF TOPIC but the Patriots appear to have traded Matt Cassel to Kansas City. This after making Cassel the Franchise player which means NE would get KC’s first round pick this year and next year.

  150. In the last few days, we’ve gotten some bad breaks as far as our tourney hopes go. Many bubble teams have won big games. Today I think we need the following results to happen for our cause:

    UConn over Notre Dame
    Clemson over Florida St
    Stanford over USC
    Duke over Virginia Tech
    Purdue over Ohio St
    LSU over Kentucky
    Indiana over Penn St
    Texas over Oklahoma St
    Washington over Arizona

There are probably a few others. These results will matter none if we don’t keep winning but if it’s close at the end they will matter a lot.

  151. Still off topic… Peter King reports its a 2nd rounder for Cassel and Vrabel.

  152. Wake by 6 at half despite the fact they havent made a 3 yet. Good news for us…

  153. I keep track of some of those teams Eddie but one I have stopped worrying about is FSU. They are in the tourney now so it is irrelevant. BC is in also unless they just totally collapse.

We are fighting with Miami and Tech. Early in the Duke game Techis getting handled. Duke is up 11 with 12 minutes left in the first half.

I just don’t believe the committee doesn’t consider conference affiliation. I think one of us will get in not all three. Maybe two if they really do well but no shot at all three.

  154. I feel sick to my stomach watching the Tech game and rooting for Duke.

  155. Dook is handling the Chokies with Henderson and Scheyerface leading the way. Hate to see them win but it’s good for us. Maybe the building will collapse…

This Mosley thing has been beat to death, but I’ll kick the corpse. I was one of the ones trashing him in the dook game, but my comments were specific to that game. To be fair, his ankle was hurt which I didnt consider too much, but that should be another reason to try someone else on Henderson. I love Mosley and think his scoring will come, but he was hurting us in that game. Overall, I think most of us are in agreement regarding SM, we’re just saying different things.

I hadn’t even considered Goins transferring for the open schollie. I’m hearing a lot of chatter about Lance and MD. I am in full support of this.

  156. ESPN’s College BB scoreboard has a ‘Bubble Watch’ filter if you want to check out how the bubble teams are doing.

  157. So, we gotta roote for Duke against VA Tech, huh? crap! Oh well. Here is to hoping we beat NC State and Wake.

Speaking of Wake, which channel will that game be on people? I really really need to know.

    Cheers

  158. Oh no. Fucking Duke.

  159. VT LOSES!

  160. Duke Refs strike again. VTech got Hosed. Schyer spun around about a million times walking all over the place for about 6 seconds and no call. Let them call a TO. Good for us. Glad Tech lost but pretty bad officiating. HaHa. I could see Tech losing all the rest of their games. And Seth Greenberg freaking out again.

  161. The Wake Forest game is a Raycom game so happy hunting.

  162. haha… yea, I saw that no call on the travel and just laughed. It looked like he moved about a full 2 or 3 feet and it couldve been a 5 sec call.

  163. Terps beat duke today in LAX game.

  164. One good thing about being down here in Raleigh, I get virtually every ACC game.

Duke winning is very good. There is no chance Va Tech beats UNC, none. The State game is big because it gives us some breathing room. We win that and then we just have to take one of the last two and then the first round game in tourney.

Like I have said, if we play at the level we played against UNC or Duke, we will be dancing. This team has a razor thin margin for error so we can’t play at even 80% and beat anyone.

  165. Ur right about that Ricksterps…and the NCST game isn’t a gimmie.

  166. I think the best way to look at this is just one game at a time…Let’s just focus on NC St and that’s all. Get the win, it is a must. Immiediately after that, you focus on Wake since it’s a short turnaround. You get that win, it makes the rest of the week a little bit easier leading up to Saturday. I think they can do it and I think they will win tomorrow, should be a good one though!

  167. The Washington Post just doesn’t quit. What they have against the University of Maryland I have no idea.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/28/AR2009022802064.html

  168. That whole story is ridicules. They said right there that they want him to be with UA no matter where he goes. Then his dad says the sneakers “suck”…lol. You have a writer with the Post trying to make his name on the back of Maryland.

So he writes a three part series on Gary not recruiting then Gary gets involved with a big time recruit and he goes after that…priceless.

  169. It’s officially March let the madness begin.

Taran Buie didn’t like the UA shoes that he got either. Wore them for a few games and practice then stopped.

  170. “The most elite high school basketball players are often recruited by shoe companies, but rarely is a company also a major benefactor of a university pursuing the same player.”

PrisYan say this…ignoring Nike….then talk about Nike without mentioning that Nike and Phil Knight have done this for decades.

They then interview other AD-type people from inside the ACC!! What else is the assoc-AD at VT going to say about a rival school?

“NCAA recruiting bylaws can make such an arrangement dicey.” Notice…not cut and dry but dicey. Dicey…a 4 webpage long story on dicey? Dicey? Really?

So, the 3 part series on how Gary won’t recruit…and now a 4 page long diatribe insinuating that Gary is close (diecy) to crossing a line because he recruiting a 5 star player?

Honestly, I haven’t seen such dot connecting in the WaPo since The Starr Report. Seriously. At least Bubba got a bj…Gary’s just getting a sore ass.

  171. The team is fighting for their tourney lives and the local beat writer wants to write about this now. I sense an agenda here. Is there someone in the AD office that’s holding hands with this goofball Prisbell?

Meanwhile, Notre Dame, Va Tech, USC, Ohio St, Kentucky and Arizona all lost today. That can only help us. Tomorrow I think we’d like to see the following results:

    Wisconsin over Michigan
    Florida over Tennessee
    Rutgers over Providence
    Syracuse over Cincinnati

    and of course…

    Terps over Pack

  172. DBR – off topic, but as an FYI, when a team trades a franchised player, they can agree to other compensation. If a franchised player signs with another team and the team that franchised them doesn’t match they would receive 2 first round picks as compensation. The pats agreed to take a single 2nd rounder for this trade.

  173. After the Duke game, my head has been telling me that we will lost to NC State. But I wake up this morning and feel completely different. I think we’re gonna win!

NC State is a big team but I think height is misleading when it comes to them. Their big guys all like to shoot from the perimeter. I think we should play them straight up and play our small lineup as much as possible. We can beat them down the floor with our superior speed. We have to defend the 3-point line. I think if we play them 2 points vs 2 points possession after possession we can win with execution.

  174. Thanks for clearing that up NY-Terp. I was at the office and a co-worker, that happens to be a Pats fan, got a txt and told me about the trade. I asked him wut KC had to give up and he said two first round pix since Cassel was the ‘franchise’ player. Guess he didn’t know full details…oh well. At least I posted the news before ESPN.com did LOL

Now for the TERPS. Need a win tonight BADLY. Any road win isa good win, even if they don’t have a top 50 RPI. The Terps just need to stack some wins in these remaining games starting tonight.

    GO TERPS…I’M ALL IN!

  175. Jordan Williams 36 points, 22 rebounds and 6 blocks last night.

  176. Can anybody tell me our current rpi. And where i can find out what it is on a regular basis. sorry if this seems like a dumb question or is already mentioned in earlier blogs.
    thank you

  177. http://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/rpi/?tt=2

I go to this site but there are many others. It has us at 58 right now.

It will be interesting to see how the committee uses the RPI this year. It took a beating two years ago as being a flawed tool to measure a team’s wins and losses. Last year they really didn’t put a lot of weight into it. I forget who the team was but someone got left out with like a top 20 RPI.

  178. Also, realtimerpi.com is a good one. And I think the highest RPI ever to be left out was Missouri State a few years back when the Valley was getting the same number of bids as the ACC.

  179. The Post article is ridiculous. For those who watch “The Wire”, this really sounds like something out of season 5 — A dying business in need of a jump start so they pounce on any thing that sounds like a conspiracy or story. There are very little facts in this story and the fact that the most of the quotes come from someone w/ the Virginia Tech AD is insane.

To summarize, the Post first nailed us for Gary not getting his hands dirty w/ the AAU system which led us to recruiting going down — AND NOW when we’re in the midst of recruiting a blue chipper, they figure something must be up so they go after the school and it’s apparel company. Sickening

  180. Fcuk the WaPo. From here on out, I am banning all of their Terps coverage. Their UMD Insider sucks anyway.

  181. Out of the three games left before the NCAA tourney, I gotta say the UVA one worries me the most. I can see us taking out nc state today, and I think we have a shot with Wake. But UVA always gets up for our games and has played spoiler before. I can see them driving a stake through our tourney hopes if we beat nc state and lose to wake. lets hope not – man i hate uva.

Andy Katz can see them doing damage to tourney hopes as well:

“Virginia could be a spoiler in Atlanta. The Cavaliers aren’t lying down. Virginia beat Clemson and Virginia Tech at home earlier this season and then gave Miami fits before losing by seven on Thursday. They pushed Wake Forest for most of the game in Saturday’s 70-60 loss”

First things first though – we gotta smack down the wolfpack today. Lets go terps!!.

  182. Check that first sentence – I obviously meant ACC tourney

  183. Billy D – let’s worry about UVA next week! I have enough heartburn trying to figure out which MD team will show up tonight

  184. GO TERPS!!! 3 games to go, everyone is vital.

Hopefully Mosley’s ankle is ok, hopefully we can avoid foul trouble and hopefully we play smart enough to get out of raleigh with a win.

  185. This is from ESPN’S Weekly Watch…Before this though the most important thing is to win today…Go Terps!

Twenty Places To Be This Week
College Park, Md., Tuesday: Maryland still has life and a win over Wake Forest would certainly help the resume. The atmosphere should be as intense as the North Carolina and Duke home games. The Terps will need to feed off the good vibes in the building.

  186. A decision on whether or not Mosley starts/plays will be made close to game time.
