They Can’t Win (& Cal Game Thread)

I don’t mean the Terps can’t win the game against Cal on Saturday. They might.

I mean the Terps can’t win in the media, and that’s not a good sign for this program.

First let me say I’m as frustrated as anyone in the Terps inconsistencies in the past 4 seasons. They have not earned the benefit of the doubt in any way, but the way some of the media (notably David Steele of the Sun, and we’ll get to him in a second) have bashed this team borders on unfair. I’m not saying they don’t deserve criticism, but in today’s world the way the newspapers cover the team has a huge affect on recruiting and like I said earlier, this is not a good sign.

All week, most of the newspapers and “insiders” have asked for predictions and dug up former Terp players for their insight on the team. One notable former player Lamont Jordan took a mighty shot at the Fridge and basically said all his success was due to the players Mike Locksley recruited. Now there is a discussion to be had about Locksley’s departure and the success he has had in pretty much every school he’s coached at, but to say that the Fridge had very little to do with the success is plain wrong and unfair. He seems overmatched in the past few years and it could be time to start talking about a replacement, but he has still led the team to 5 bowl games in 7 years and anyone who was watching this team in the 90’s would have given anything for that. I’m not saying he should be safe or off the hot seat, but it’s not all him.

The column I read that made me want to write this was from Steele of the Sun today. His column pretty much said that if the Terps beat Cal, it wouldn’t mean anything, it would just be a tease. He states facts from the previous few years that Maryland has played well against top teams, but doesn’t seem to get up for the lesser teams. We all know that to be true, but to come out and say a win means nothing is ridiculous. Every game is big for this program and beating a ranked team is a major accomplisment whenever you do it. I understand Steele’s point, but it just seems like the Terps just can’t win in his eyes. If they lose, well, they suck. If they win, it’s just a tease and they still will underachieve. I know he’s paid to give his opinions, I just don’t agree with this one.

Look, I just want to see some fairness. Everyone on that coaching staff works hard and while we would like to see some changes or at least some changes in philosophy, it’s not right to bash them like that. It seems so many of those columnists or ‘insiders’ just want to make headlines and say outlandish things to get people to read and react to their websites. It’s like sports radio, and we know that sports radio has very little to do with facts. Leave the bitching and moaning and negative rants to the bloggers and be a little more fair.

I may be overreacting to the article, but as a die hard fan of the Terps, I want to see my school do well and I want them to play on a fair playing field. We all know changes have to be made, but if they were to win this game, it would be huge and perhaps a start to a memorable season. It might be a tease again, but I’d rather get a win and take it from there. Then again, we might get creamed on national TV and the frustration will continue to build. Whatever happens, I’ll try and treat this team fair.

Now bring on the Bears and let’s see if we can give them a game!

  1. If MD wins this game, I think it would be a huge win, a season altering win. If they beat Cal, they will stomp Eastern Michigan the following game and gain some serious steam heading into ACC play in a very down ACC year. Yes, a win against Cal sets up the whole “what if” scenario, but 3-1 heading into ACC play would be huge. Yes, 4-0 would have been great, but after last week, I’d be thrilled with a win.

Honestly, though, I am quite surprised that MD is only a 14-15 point underdog. The people in Vegas must know something that we don’t. I don’t know how they win this game. They have to play perfect and Cal has to play down a level or two from what they’ve done so far this year.

My wife found this “Happy Terp” flag on the internet, and we plan to hang it tomorrow weather permitting. I love the “Happy Terp” logo. It brings me back to my younger days, sitting in the stands at Byrd Stadium watching Boomer Esiason play his final homecoming game at MD. The Terp mascot walking around in the stands made me crack up…still does. Just know that if MD gets the doors blown off tomorrow, I will be playing Taps in my head as I lower my “Happy Terp” flag. It’ll be like when the dad in A Christmas Story has to throw away his leg lamp.

I’m still going to watch the game, and I am still going to get all nervous before the game. My wife will still have to take the kids and leave when the game is on. I want MD to win…I just don’t know how they can. I can’t get my hopes up and I can’t not care. Quagmire.

  2. The media portrayls of the University are disconcerting to say the least; however, we need to “manage” the media by first getting our act together on the field. Once we can accomplish that feat, then we can work on our “brand.” One of the things I think we’ve lost from the earlier years this decade is a bit of our image. People don’t Fear the Turtle anymore, and if our football and basketball programs keep struggling year-in/year-out with mediocrity, no one will even pay attention to the Turtle anymore. We’ve lost our “brand” and we need to get it back. A win against Cal would be a good start.

  3. I like the Fridge, I do. But it is hard to argue that his shining moments were with recruits from a previous coach. That’s just facts. He has had mild success with his own but nothing like what he started with.

Local columnist generally either kill the home team or worship them. Down here in Raleigh it is all positive coverage for the local teams. When they lose it’s either injuries or it’s because they are “doing it the right way” which of course means everyone else is cheating.

It is just ignorant to say this game wouldn’t mean anything. The ACC is way down. They win this and you could see a BCS bowl. Someone from the ACC has to be in that bowl right?

Don’t sweat the Sun as far as recruiting. Recruits go where they are comfortable and where they think they will get a chance to shine. The bigger reason to worry is when we waste talent like Hayward-Bey. How are we going to get another top WR when every coach can point to him and say “that would be how they use you”.

If we bring some pressure I think we have a shot tomorrow. If we sit back on D it will be a very long day.

  4. Lee Corso just said on Gameday that we will lose by 21 points AT LEAST. Ugh. It’s time to get our act together and give them a game. I can live with a close loss, but a blowout would be devastating.

  5. Thoughts on the new logo?

By the way, I forgot who asked about numbering the comments; but I looked into it and there is no way to do it through this wordpress template. It sucks. This is the only template I can find that looks good for a Terps blog. I am considering other options for hosting but I’m not ready to make any decisions just yet…..

  6. It’s gametime. The hell with ESPN and other news outlets. It’s all about the flavor of the week with them. We take care of business, eventually we”l get their respect, but other than for recruiting purposes, who gives a rats ass.

My mind says we lose by 24, my heart says we win by 3.

  7. Wow, great first series for both the defense and then offense!!!

  8. Now that’s a good start folks!!

Looong way to go, but you couldn’t ask for much more so far.

  9. Let’s go boys!!!! Gotta keep this up!!!!

  10. Don’t take the foot off of the gas. Hude to go up 14. Cal is on their heels. If MD can get a 3 and out and score again before the end of the first quarter, that would be absolutely huge. HUGE.

MD’s line is really coming off of the ball. MD’s D line is shooting gaps. Cal’s back are having to dodge people at the line of scrimmage. Gotta hold the big plays down. Make Cal earn it.

The commentators keep talking about the heat and humidity. That could be a big deal late in the game.

    I hope early hope.

  11. Wow, now we can’t let up with the soft D and the passsive O.

  12. Was that a safety blitz I just saw on 3rd and 10 at our ten yard line?????

    I cant believe it.

  13. I got sick last night so I mised teh game today and pissed cause we are looking GREAT!

  14. To quote Butch Cassidy (NOT the Caps former shitty coach): “Who ARE those guys?”

    KEEP IT UP!!!

  15. Those were big stops by our defense to hold them to field goals. We better keep that foot on the gas!

  16. Red zone defense looks strong. Now if only we could stop them before they get into our territory, but so far, I’ll take it!

  17. Great, out of the timeout, a fumble from trying to do too much. Defense needs to step up!

  18. What’s the over/under on how many more times the announcers are going to say “It’s only XX:XX IN THE MORNING in Berkeley”? Enough already!

  19. Yea, I remember USC waking up and smacking UVA around under the same conditions.

  20. wow great ending to a GREAT 1st half. Let’s keep it going TERPS!

  21. Halftime observations. These announcers are miserable. How many excuses are they going to give Cal. Give us some freaking credit already!

This team is on a mission. I’m not saying they are going to cruise to victory, but this is the team we expected to see this season. They are not perfect, but they can make plays. I don’t disagree with anything they’ve done so far except perhaps the Portis bad pass on the screen. Not because of what Andre Ware said. Mixing it up is fine, but the opponent already has all of their players playing at the line as it is when Portis is in there, so what’s the difference between a run and a screen pass. They need to let Portis throw downfield.

All in all, I’ve seen great effort and good tackling. We dodged a bullet late, but we have earned our breaks today so far.

    30 more minutes boys!!!

  22. Gregg,
I agree, a play action would be a great call for him when he’s in. Also, I HATE FSU but taking a play out of their playbook for years, dunno why we never like AIR it out DEEP on 1st and 10 from our 1. I think it would be a great call and with Bey it can work!

  23. Defense continues to step up…but the offense needs to move the ball to keep them fresh, and must put up more points to alleviate the pressure. Need to mix up the play calling, it’s gotten a little stale.

  24. Defense with their first real mistake with the defensive holding…

  25. I know several locals are AT the game, but why am I the only one leaving comments? Haha

  26. Before anybody complains, that was a solid strategy by Cosh to let them dink and dunk down the field. The problem was not getting them on 4th down and allowing the QB to escape pressure. Gotta get at least 2 first downs here!

  27. Hey GAK – come on over to the other thread – the water is fine. BTW wheels – I always thought the happy Terp looked too wussy
